Description

ABB NDBU-95C DDCS Star Fiber Optic Branching Unit, Part No. 64008366 (3AFE64008366)

Product Description

The NDBU-95C is ABB dedicated fiber optic branching unit designed for DDCS (Distributed Drives Communication System). It converts the serial DDCS bus topology into star topology by receiving optical telegram from master controller and regenerating signals to multiple drive nodes independently. Each drive communicates individually to the master through this unit; if one drive loses power or fails, the rest of the DDCS network remains operational without total communication breakdown. This fiber isolation design effectively eliminates EMI noise from high-power inverter cabinets. It provides individual channel LED diagnostics for fast troubleshooting, widely used for multi-drive coordinated control in web lines, rolling mills, paper machines and industrial processing equipment.

Compatibility & Installation Pitfalls

Compatibility

  • Compatible Drives: ABB ACS800, DCS800, ACSM1, DCS880 series drives with DDCS interface
  • Interface Modules: RDCO-02, RDCO-03, RDCU, AINT series DDCS optical adapter cards
  • Controller: ABB AC800M with CI858 DriveBus module
  • Fiber Cable: ABB DDCS dedicated multi-mode optical fiber only

Installation Pitfalls

  1. Fiber Connector Damage: DDCS optical connectors are proprietary keyed type. Do not force insertion; scratching fiber end face causes high optical attenuation and intermittent communication dropouts.
  2. Mismatched Fiber Length: Exceeding maximum allowable fiber distance per channel will trigger link loss. Follow DDCS manual distance limits strictly.
  3. EMI & Cable Routing: Route optical fiber separately from high-current power cables. Fiber can resist electrical noise, but mechanical crush on fiber pigtails creates hidden faults.
  4. Power Supply Noise: Use clean 24V DC power. Voltage ripple or unstable 24V supply can cause random channel link flickering.
  5. Star Topology Rule: NDBU-95C works for star architecture. Do not cascade multiple NDBU branching units without official ABB design approval.
  6. Hot Swap Caution: Optical ports are not hot-swappable in some running multi-drive systems; disconnect power before plugging/unplugging fiber connectors.
  7. Channel Addressing: The branching unit only regenerates optical signals; drive node addresses must be configured correctly on each inverter side.

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

Pre-Installation

  1. Verify part number NDBU-95C / 64008366 and inspect housing, terminals and optical ports for physical damage.
  2. Check all DDCS fiber cables and inspect fiber end faces for contamination or scratches.
  3. Prepare system drawing, drive address list and ESD protection tools.
  4. Confirm all drive units are powered off before installation.

Mounting & Wiring

  1. Mount NDBU-95C on DIN rail or cabinet panel, reserve sufficient ventilation clearance.
  2. Connect 24V DC power to screw terminals, observe polarity requirement.
  3. Plug master optical fiber into input port; connect each drive fiber to corresponding output ports sequentially.
  4. Secure all fiber cables to avoid tension and sharp bending.
  5. Power on the 24V supply and check PWR LED status.

Commissioning & Post-Installation Verification

  1. Power up master controller and drives one by one, check each channel link LED.
  2. Verify DDCS communication status in drive control software.
  3. Trigger single drive power cycle test to confirm other drives maintain stable communication.
  4. Monitor for intermittent link alarms during machine operation.
  5. Save network configuration, record fiber layout and channel assignment in equipment log.
