Description

Bently‑Nevada 3500/04 135489‑02 Internal Barrier I/O Module (Internal Terminations)

Product Description

The 135489‑02 is a rear‑mount four‑channel internal intrinsically‑safe barrier I/O daughter‑board under the 3500/04 internal barrier system, designed exclusively to pair with the front‑side 3500/42M Proximitor/Seismic Monitor main board. It integrates intrinsic‑safety energy‑limiting circuits and internal field‑wiring termination terminals. This module provides safe electrical interfaces for proximity probes, seismic velocity sensors and accelerometers installed within hazardous classified areas, eliminating the requirement for external zener barriers. It receives power and digital communication from the 3500 rack backplane, supplies regulated sensor excitation power, limits fault energy into hazardous zones, and conditions transducer return signals for the front‑monitor board processing. It cannot work independently without matching 3500/42M main monitor board and 138257‑01 barrier earthing module. Original OEM production is discontinued; it is supplied as aftermarket replacement spare for legacy hazardous‑area TSI installations.

Key Features & Benefits

  1. Integrated intrinsic‑safety barrier with internal termination: Combines IS energy‑limiting safety circuit and field‑wiring screw terminals in one rear module; removes extra external barrier hardware, reduces cabinet wiring complexity and installation cost for hazardous‑area transducer loops.
  2. Four‑channel mixed‑sensor compatibility: Supports mixed inputs of eddy‑current proximity probes, velocity and acceleration seismic sensors on different channels for shaft vibration, thrust‑position, differential‑expansion and casing‑vibration measurements.
  3. System‑level hazardous‑area certification: Forms certified intrinsically‑safe loops together with matched Bently‑Nevada field transducers and 138257‑01 earthing module; meets ATEX / Class I Div 2 safety requirements without performance degradation to monitor measurementsBaker Hugh….
  4. Coexistence flexibility: Internal‑barrier I/O modules and standard non‑barrier I/O modules can co‑exist within a single 3500 rack; allows mixed hazardous‑area and safe‑area sensor points in one machinery‑protection rack.
  5. Hot‑swap capable rear‑side design: Supports hot‑swap replacement while rack remains powered, without shutting down other monitor‑channel protection functions (subject to proper barrier‑earthing continuity).
  6. Full backward‑compatibility: Works with legacy 3500/42M main boards, 3500 rack firmware, RIM and power‑supply assemblies; drop‑in spare replacement for existing 3500‑series internal‑barrier systems.

Application Fields

  • Machinery‑protection racks for steam turbines, gas turbines, centrifugal and axial compressors in petrochemical refineries and natural‑gas processing plants, where transducers are mounted in ATEX / Class I Div 2 hazardous classified zones.
  • Combined‑cycle power‑generation facilities requiring intrinsic‑safe interfaces for proximity and seismic sensors installed inside hazardous‑area turbine‑isolation compartments.
  • Rotating‑equipment TSI monitoring cabinets measuring shaft radial‑vibration, thrust‑position, differential‑expansion and casing absolute‑vibration with field sensors in explosive‑risk locations.
  • Retrofit and spare‑part replacement for existing legacy 3500 racks configured with 3500/42M monitors and internal‑barrier hazardous‑area signal loops.

Installation and Maintenance

Installation

  1. Confirm the 138257‑01 barrier earthing module has been properly fitted and rack protective‑earth connection is securely terminated before installing 135489‑02. Improper earthing will invalidate intrinsic‑safety certification.
  2. Insert 135489‑02 into corresponding rear‑slot directly behind the 3500/42M front‑monitor board; ensure complete connector engagement with rack backplane.
  3. Wire hazardous‑area field transducers directly onto the built‑in screw terminals of 135489‑02. Strictly observe maximum allowable cable capacitance and inductance parameters defined in official 3500 internal‑barrier manual for intrinsically‑safe loop compliance.
  4. Complete rack configuration via 3500 Rack Configuration Software; enable internal‑barrier function for corresponding 42M monitor channels.
  5. After power‑on, verify module health status, check for barrier‑fault or ground‑loop diagnostic alarms within rack event log.

Important Note: 135489‑02 cannot operate as standalone hardware. It must pair with both 3500/42M main monitor board and 138257‑01 earthing module to maintain hazardous‑area safety certification.

Maintenance

  1. Perform periodic visual inspection: check rear‑module terminals, connectors and earthing bus for corrosion, dust accumulation and loose wiring connections.
  2. Review rack event log periodically for barrier‑fault, ground‑fault or loop‑fault diagnostics; resolve field‑cable insulation or transducer faults immediately when alarms appear.
  3. Hot‑swap replacement is permitted with rack powered‑on; re‑verify protective‑earth continuity and clear fault alarms after module exchange.
  4. Avoid mechanical shock, moisture and conductive contamination to rear‑side printed‑circuit assembly during module handling.
  5. Refer to official document 141495 (3500 Internal‑Barrier System Manual) for full hazardous‑area installation constraints, loop‑parameter limits and fault‑troubleshooting guidance.
