Description
TRICONEX T8310 Power Supply Module
Product Overview & Applications
The TRICONEX T8310 is a high-reliability Power Supply Module designed specifically for the Tricon Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Safety Instrumented System (SIS). Its primary function is to convert incoming plant AC or DC power into clean, isolated, and regulated DC voltages required by the main processors, communication cards, and I/O modules.
Typical Applications:
- Emergency Shutdown (ESD) Systems: Providing fault-tolerant power for critical safety logic solvers in offshore platforms and refineries.
- Fire & Gas (F&G) Systems: Ensuring continuous operation of detection and suppression logic in petrochemical facilities.
- Burner Management Systems (BMS): Powering safety controllers for furnace and boiler protection in power generation.
- Critical Infrastructure: Supporting nuclear safety applications and high-integrity process control where power failure is not an option.

Key Features
- Redundant & Hot-Swappable: Designed for N+1 redundant configurations. Modules can be replaced online without shutting down the system, ensuring maximum availability and eliminating single points of failure.
- Comprehensive Diagnostics: Equipped with LED indicators and internal self-diagnostics for PASS, FAULT, ALARM, TEMP, and BAT LOW. It continuously monitors internal health and reports status to the main processor for predictive maintenance.
- High Isolation & Noise Immunity: Features robust galvanic isolation (>1000 VAC) between input and output, preventing field noise and ground loops from interfering with sensitive TMR voting logic.
- Wide Input Tolerance: Capable of handling significant voltage sags and surges from plant distribution systems without resetting or failing, enhancing system resilience during power disturbances.
- Safety Certified: TÜV certified and approved for SIL 3 and Nuclear Safety applications, meeting rigorous IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards.
Installation Guidelines
- Rack Compatibility: Install in designated power supply slots within Tricon Main, Expansion, or RXM chassis. Ensure the chassis keying aligns with the module.
- Redundant Configuration: For critical applications, always install two or three 8310 modules in parallel. The system will automatically share the load and isolate any failed unit.
- Wiring & Fusing: Use appropriately sized conductors for the 120 VAC/VDC input. The module includes an internal 5A time-delay fuse, but external disconnects and overcurrent protection are recommended per NEC/IEC standards.
- Thermal Management: Although convection-cooled, ensure adequate airflow within the cabinet. Do not obstruct the module’s ventilation openings.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- LED Status Monitoring:
- PASS: Normal operation.
- FAULT: Module failure or output out of tolerance.
- ALARM: Non-critical warning (e.g., fan failure in some variants, or redundancy loss).
- TEMP: Over-temperature condition; check cabinet cooling.
- BAT LOW: Backup battery voltage low (if equipped with battery backup option).
- Hot-Swap Procedure: When replacing a faulty module, simply pull the defective unit and insert the replacement. The redundant modules will instantly pick up the load. No software configuration is typically required for power modules.
- Battery Maintenance: If the module supports battery backup, test and replace batteries according to the manufacturer’s schedule to ensure ride-through capability during total power loss.
