Description

TRICONEX 8120X Main Chassis

Product Overview

The TRICONEX 8120X is the main chassis (main rack) for the Tricon CX TMR Safety Instrumented System, manufactured by Schneider Electric (Triconex). It provides backplane TriBus bus, module slots and system‑level communication interfaces for the Tricon CX platform. It hosts triple redundant main processors, communication modules, and connects to remote I/O expansion chassis 8131X via triplicated RS‑485 links. Powered by external redundant 24 VDC power supplies, it is the mechanical and electrical backbone for SIL 3 safety‑critical control systems in process industries。

Typical Applications

  • ESD Emergency Shutdown System: Main system rack for refinery, petrochemical plant emergency shutdown safety controllers.
  • BMS Burner Management System: Core chassis for burner safety logic execution platform.
  • HIPPS High‑Integrity Pressure Protection System: Host rack for over‑pressure safety protection system.
  • Fire & Gas Safety System: SIS main cabinet hardware carrier for fire‑gas safety interlock.
  • Turbine & Compressor Protection: Safety controller main rack for power‑generation machinery protection cabinets.
  • On‑shore & Off‑shore Oil‑gas Facilities: Main chassis for platform and pipeline safety instrumented systems.
  • Chemical Process Safety: Central rack for reactor safety interlock SIS configuration.

Key Features

  1. Tricon CX TMR‑Optimized Backplane: Purpose‑built backplane for 3009X processor modules, supporting triple‑voting TriBus high‑speed fault‑tolerant data transmission.
  2. Modular Slot Layout: Dedicated triple‑processor slots plus four communication module slots, supports redundant communication module deployment for high‑availability host communication.
  3. Triplicated Expansion Bus: Triple RS‑485 communication links to 8131X expansion racks; triplicated physical paths prevent single‑cable failure from taking down remote I/O.
  4. Foxboro DCS Time‑Sync Integration: Native time‑sync interface for tight time alignment between SIS and Foxboro DCS, ensuring accurate SOE sequence‑of‑events time‑stamping across plant‑wide systems.
  5. Redundant External Power Input: Designed for dual redundant 24 VDC external power feeds; power supply redundancy is implemented outside the chassis.
  6. Full Hot‑swap Support: All processors and communication modules installed in 8120X support hot‑swap without SIS shutdown, minimizing plant maintenance downtime.
  7. Wide‑Temperature Industrial Construction: Robust mechanical rack design, suitable for harsh industrial cabinet environments with wide ambient temperature fluctuation.
  8. System‑Wide Diagnostics Support: Backplane routes fault and diagnostic signals from all plugged‑in modules to main processors for TriStation software monitoring and alarm reporting.

Installation Guidelines

  1. Pre‑installation Inspection: Inspect chassis housing, backplane connectors, slot guides for mechanical damage. Observe strict ESD anti‑static handling procedures.
  2. Rack‑mount Installation: Secure 8120X into standard 19‑inch equipment cabinet with mounting brackets. Ensure adequate front‑rear ventilation space for heat dissipation.
  3. Power Wiring: Connect two independent redundant 24 VDC power sources to chassis power terminals. Do not use single power feed for SIL‑3 safety application.
  4. Module Insertion: Insert three matched‑revision 3009X main processor modules into dedicated processor slots. Insert communication modules into COM slots, lock each front latch securely.
  5. Expansion‑Chassis Cabling: Wire triplicated RS‑485 cables from 8120X expansion ports to corresponding 8131X I/O expansion chassis. Respect cable length and termination resistor requirements.
  6. DCS Time‑Sync Wiring (if applicable): Connect Foxboro DCS time‑synchronization signal interface. Configure time‑sync parameters in TriStation engineering software.
  7. Power‑on & Commissioning: Apply redundant 24 VDC power; wait for processor synchronization completion. Download safety application project, verify system health status, check for backplane or module faults before putting SIS online.
  8. Environment Requirements: Install inside indoor control cabinet; avoid moisture, corrosive gas and direct sunlight; operating temperature must stay within ‑40 °C ~ +70 °C.
