Description
Kongsberg RMP201-8 Remote Multi-Purpose I/O Module, K-Chief / AutoChief Distributed Marine Signal Interface
Product Description
The RMP201-8 (Part No.324400) is a marine-grade distributed remote multi-purpose I/O module developed by Kongsberg Maritime for K-Chief vessel monitoring, AutoChief propulsion control and K-Pos DP automation systems. It features eight software-configurable channels without hardware jumpers, supporting digital input, digital output, 4–20mA / 0–10V analog input, analog output and potentiometer signal acquisition. It adopts dual redundant RBUS (Remote Bus) RS485 communication, eliminating single point communication failure. The PCB is conformal coated against salt mist, humidity and vibration. Built-in comprehensive channel diagnostics detect open circuit, short circuit and power faults, and transmit alarms to the vessel HMI. This unit is widely deployed as field-side signal collection and control node for engine room, pump room and thruster compartments, reducing long-distance signal cabling on vessels.

Compatibility & Installation Traps
Compatibility
- Native systems: Kongsberg K-Chief 600/700, AutoChief C20, K-Pos DP platform
- Configuration tool: Kongsberg K-Chief Engineering Tool
- Bus topology: RBUS redundant RS485 fieldbus; not compatible with standard Modbus RTU without gateway
- Field signals: 24VDC dry contact, 4–20mA transmitters, proportional valve analog control signals
Critical Installation Traps
- RBUS Redundancy Miswiring: RBUS A and RBUS B are two independent redundant lines. Do not cross-connect A/B pairs; wrong pairing disables fault-tolerant backup.
- Channel Mode Configuration Risk: All 8 channels are software-defined. A channel set as AO cannot read AI signals, and misconfiguration may damage connected transmitters or actuators.
- Marine Power Ripple: Vessel 24VDC supply with high ripple can trigger random channel diagnostics alarms. Use isolated, filtered DC supply for I/O racks.
- Ground Loop on Analog Signals: 4–20mA loops are susceptible to vessel potential differences. Isolate analog loops for remote field sensors to avoid measurement drift.
- IP20 Cabinet Requirement: The module is only IP20 rated. Never mount directly in exposed splash zones; install inside marine junction boxes or control cabinets.
- RBUS Termination Resistor: Only fit 120Ω termination resistors at the two physical endpoints of the entire RBUS trunk. Adding resistors at intermediate RMP nodes corrupts bus communication.
- Conformal Coating Repair: Scratches to the PCB conformal coating in humid engine rooms accelerate corrosion. Damaged modules need re-coating before redeployment.
- Firmware Revision Lock: RMP firmware must match the K-Chief host software version. Mismatched revisions cause bus drop-out or unrecognised channel mapping.
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
- Pre-installation inspection: Check housing, terminal blocks and PCB coating for damage. Confirm firmware revision compatibility with K-Chief / AutoChief host project.
- Mechanical mounting: Clip module onto 35mm DIN rail in marine cabinet, secure latch, reserve side clearance for convection cooling.
- Field wiring: Terminate 24VDC power, RBUS A/B bus and field sensor/actuator wiring. Fit bus termination resistors only at trunk endpoints. Separate analog signal cables from high-power cables.
- Software configuration: Open K-Chief engineering software, add RMP201-8 to RBUS topology, assign each channel to DI/DO/AI/AO function, set scaling and alarm thresholds.
- Bench commissioning: Power up, verify power and bus LED status. Perform channel force test: simulate sensor signals and check feedback on HMI; test DO output to actuators.
- Sea trial validation: Monitor RBUS health, channel diagnostics and signal quality during vessel operation. Confirm fault reporting triggers correctly on open/short circuit conditions.
- Periodic maintenance: Quarterly visual inspection of terminals and cabinet sealing. Annual RBUS communication load test and channel calibration for analog loops.
- Decommissioning: Isolate 24VDC supply before removing from DIN rail. Cap unused terminals, store spare modules in dry anti-static marine storage.
