Description
ABB SA168 Power Supply Unit, Part No. 3BSE003389R1 for ABB Advant Master DCS System
Product Description
The SA168 (3BSE003389R1) is a rack-mounted industrial power supply unit dedicated to the ABB Advant Master process control system. It converts 230 VAC mains input into stable 24 VDC output up to 25A, supplying power to Advant Master controller racks, CPU boards, I/O modules and field communication circuits. The unit integrates built-in over-current, over-voltage and short-circuit protection circuits to safeguard the DCS rack from power anomalies. It features status indicator LEDs for real-time operational diagnosis and a replaceable 10A internal fuse. Designed for continuous 24/7 operation in power, pulp & paper and chemical plants, this robust power unit is a critical spare for maintenance, rack replacement and retrofit of legacy Advant Master DCS installations.

Compatibility & Installation Pitfalls
Compatibility
- Compatible System: ABB Advant Master DCS rack system
- Loads: Advant Master CPU, I/O modules, communication boards in the same rack
- Accessories: Original 10A spare fuse 5672827-10, rack mounting hardware
Installation Pitfalls
- Input Voltage Verification: Confirm input is 230 VAC before powering on. Wrong input voltage will permanently destroy the power unit and connected DCS modules.
- Full Rack Shutdown Required: Do not replace SA168 while the DCS rack is energized. Power loss during hot swap triggers controller trip and loss of process control.
- Load Current Calculation: Total rack consumption cannot exceed 25A rated output. Overload activates protection shutdown and may cause intermittent power dropouts.
- Grounding Requirement: Reliable protective earth connection is mandatory. Poor grounding increases noise risk and reduces surge protection performance.
- Ventilation Clearance: Maintain sufficient air flow around the unit. Blocked ventilation causes overheating and automatic thermal shutdown.
- Fuse Replacement: Only use specified 10A replacement fuse. Higher-rated fuses remove safety protection and create fire hazard.
- Parallel Operation: Do not connect multiple SA168 units in parallel without official ABB design approval; unbalanced current sharing leads to premature failure.
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
Pre-Installation
- Verify part number SA168 / 3BSE003389R1. Inspect housing, terminals, LED indicators and internal fuse for physical damage.
- Back up Advant Master controller configuration and process logic.
- Perform lockout/tagout of 230V AC input power. Confirm zero voltage at the power input terminals.
- Calculate total rack load current to ensure it stays within the 25A output rating.
- Prepare wiring diagram, ESD tools and spare 10A fuse.
Power Supply Replacement & Installation
- Wear ESD wrist strap when handling internal wiring and rack components.
- Disconnect AC input cable and 24VDC rack bus cables from old .
- Remove mounting fasteners and extract the old power supply unit from the rack.
- Position new into rack, secure mounting screws.
- Reconnect AC input wiring and 24VDC distribution bus, strictly follow wiring diagram.
- Confirm protective earth connection is properly terminated.
Post-Installation Verification
- Re-energize 230V AC input. Check power LED on , confirm no fault alarm.
- Measure 24VDC output voltage at rack bus terminals to verify stable output.
- Power up Advant Master controller and all I/O modules, check module status LEDs.
- Monitor rack bus voltage under normal operating load for 30 minutes to detect voltage drift.
- Verify all DCS communication channels and I/O signals work normally.
- Record serial number, replacement date and measured output voltage in equipment maintenance log.
