Description

Bently‑Nevada 3500/92 Communication Gateway Assembly (136180‑01 Main Board +136188‑02 Rear I/O Module)

Product Description

The 3500/92 (136180‑01 + 136188‑02) is full‑height rack‑mounted communication gateway for Bently‑Nevada 3500‑M‑series machinery‑protection rack. It is composed of front gateway CPU main board 136180‑01 and rear mixed‑interface I/O daughter‑board 136188‑02.

This gateway collects real‑time measured values, channel status, alarm events and diagnostic data from all monitor modules over rack backplane bus, and converts internal rack data into standard industrial protocols for external host systems. The 136188‑02 rear I/O provides 10BASE‑T Ethernet RJ45 port plus multi‑mode serial interface supporting RS232 / RS422 / RS485, working for Modbus‑TCP and Modbus‑RTU communication simultaneously.

3500/92 is purely a data‑acquisition communication device. It does NOT participate in machinery‑protection voting or trip logic. Communication failures will never affect hard‑wired alarm and trip outputs from monitor and relay modules. OEM production discontinued; only available as aftermarket replacement spare for legacy turbomachinery TSI systemsBaker Hugh….

Key Features & Benefits

  1. Combined Ethernet + multi‑serial dual‑media interface: Single rear‑side module provides both Ethernet TCP/IP and RS232/422/485 serial channels, supports connecting modern TCP‑based DCS and legacy serial‑based PLC/SCADA host at the same time, improves project integration flexibility.
  2. Custom configurable Modbus register mapping: Users can select required measurement points, alarm bits and diagnostic tags to build custom Modbus register layout, eliminate redundant unused registers and optimize host‑system reading efficiency.
  3. Software‑selectable serial physical mode: Serial port can be switched among / RS422 / RS485 by configuration software without hardware jumper modification; RS485 supports multi‑drop bus topology for multi‑host connection.
  4. Non‑intrusive to protection safety chain: Gateway runs independently of protection voting logic. Loss of Ethernet or serial communication will not impact monitor alarm, relay‑output and trip safety functions.
  5. Multi‑module parallel deployment support: Multiple 3500/92 assemblies can be installed within one rack for separate data publishing towards different plant control systems.
  6. Backward‑compatible maintainable architecture: Compatible with all 3500‑M‑series monitors, power‑supplies and legacy firmware. Rear‑side 136188‑02 I/O supports hot‑swap under rack powered‑on; front‑side 136180‑01 main‑board requires slot power‑down before removal.

Application Fields

  • Power‑generation, petrochemical and oil‑gas facilities: transmits vibration, thrust position, speed, bearing‑temperature and rack alarm‑status data from steam‑turbine, gas‑turbine, centrifugal‑compressor 3500‑M TSI racks to DCS, PLC, historian systems through Modbus‑TCP or Modbus‑RTU protocol.
  • Retrofit projects mixing new TCP control system and old serial‑based automation equipment, requiring both Ethernet and multi‑serial communication channels from single gateway module.
  • Spare‑part replacement and retrofit for legacy 3500 racks originally equipped with combined‑interface variant 3500/92‑04‑01‑00 gateway assembly.

Installation and Maintenance

Installation

  1. Mate front main‑board 136180‑01 firmly with rear‑side 136188‑02 I/O module; insert full‑height assembly into any free full‑height slot inside 3500 rack.
  2. Connect RJ45 Ethernet cable to rear‑side 10BASE‑T port; wire serial field cables onto corresponding screw terminals, configure bus termination resistor for multi‑drop network as required.
  3. Launch 3500 Rack Configuration Software, build custom Modbus register mapping table, set serial parameters: station address, baud‑rate, parity, stop‑bit, select serial physical mode(/422/485), download configuration to rack.
  4. Power‑up rack; confirm front‑panel OK‑LED is healthy. Inspect rack event‑log for gateway self‑diagnosis, backplane‑communication, Ethernet‑link and serial‑bus fault alarms. Validate Modbus data reading from DCS / PLC host side.

Important Note: Only rear‑side 136188‑02 supports hot‑swap while rack powered‑on. Front‑side 136180‑01 CPU main‑board must be installed or removed with corresponding slot power disabled. This gateway will not execute any machinery‑protection voting or trip logic.

Maintenance

  1. Periodically inspect rear‑module Ethernet port, serial screw terminals and connectors for dust accumulation, corrosion and loose wiring connections.
  2. Regularly review rack event‑log for gateway fault, backplane‑communication fault, Ethernet‑link‑down or serial‑bus‑error diagnostics. Troubleshoot plant network / serial‑bus infrastructure upon communication dropout.
  3. For rear‑I/O interface fault: hot‑swap 136188‑02 under rack powered‑on condition; verify Ethernet and serial Modbus‑data reading function after replacement.
  4. For main‑board gateway logic fault: power‑down assigned rack slot before extracting 136180‑01 main‑board; reassemble with matched rear I/O module, download gateway configuration and validate full‑function recovery.
  5. Avoid mechanical shock and conductive contamination during module‑handling. Refer to Bently‑Nevada official document Doc‑141542 (3500/92 Gateway Datasheet & Manual) for complete installation constraints and detailed troubleshooting guidanceBaker Hugh
